About Dudhwa National Park

The Dudhwa National Park, better known as the Garden of Eden, is a home to more than 38 species of mammals, 90 species of fish, 400 species of birds and 16 species of reptiles. The green world of denizens was set up in the year 1958 as a wildlife sanctuary, especially with the goal of preserving swamp deer; however in January 1977, the sanctuary was rehabilitated into a national park. Presently, the park is a part of the 'Project Tiger' to conserve tigers. In the year 1987, the park was turned into a Tiger Reserve. To guide visitors through one of the thickest forests in the country, here are some of the essential tips mentioned below. 

Main Attraction

Spread over 490 square kilometres, the Dudhwa National Park has a treasure of wildlife for its visitors, but there are certain species which deserve a spot on visitors' must watch list. On the open stretches of grasslands, move the eye-balls in all possible directions to catch a sight of a Tiger, Rhinoceros, Barasingha (Swamp Deer), Crocodile and Bengal Florican. These make up the big five of the national park. 

The national park is also inhabited by rattling diversity of birds, including Swamp Francolin, Bengal Florican and Great Slaty Woodpecker. Also, one can get to see sarus cranes, cormorants, heron, minivets, kingfishers, orioles, and bulbuls. 

Location

The Dudhwa National Park, on the border shared between India and Nepal in the district of Lakhimpur-Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, is one of the three national parks of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. The other two are the Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary and the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. 

How to Reach

The Dudhwa National Park can be reached by road, train or plane. The Dudhwa Railway Station is situated in proximity, at a distance of about 4 km, while the nearest Airport is that of Lucknow. From the airport or the railway station, one can hire a taxi to get to the national park.

If one is travelling to the national park from Delhi, it will take about 8-9 hours drive or one can avail the train to Shahjehanpur and then take a 3-hour drive. Also, one can go to Lucknow first and then head towards Dudhwa, which is around 245 km away from Lucknow. 

Climate

In summer season, visiting the national park will make one work into a lather. The temperature goes as high as 45 degrees centigrade in summers, while it drops up to 2 degrees in winter season. The period from mid June to mid November is the rainy season in the region.

Best Time to Visit

The park is opened for visitors from 15 November to 15 June. However, for grabbing the best draws of the spot, one must plan the trip between February and April. 

Hotels and accommodation

Perhaps to avoid disturbance to the natural setting, there are not many hotels or restaurants around the park. However, to facilitate its visitors, the park has well-maintained and green accommodation options available within the premises. But in that case, one must get the bookings done at the office of the Chief Wildlife Warden in advance.

Travel tips

The authorities make sure that visitors take along a certified guide with them so that they have a comfortable safari inside the park. Also, prefer travelling light in a comfortable attire, but with sufficient amount of water to drink. Do carry a scarf or a hat to cover one's head, and shades to shield the eyes. 

Cost to Travel

To witness the glory of the mother earth, the Indian visitors have to pay INR 50, while the foreign visitors are charged INR 300 to spend three days at the site. In case one plans to stay longer, then one has to pay extra charges. For private vehicles, previously, permits were given on a payment of INR 100 and only after they received vindication in a security check conducted by the authorities. But as per the new norms, no private vehicle is allowed inside the premises. Moreover, for carrying video cameras, one has to pay a fixed amount of tariff. 

No safaris or jeep facilities are arranged by the park authorities; however, one can avail the same from private agencies. Also, one can enjoy the picturesque view of the grasslands inside the park on an elephant's back. 

Shopping

At the entry point itself, the visitors will find numerous stalls and small shops, selling the basic things that one may require during the safari, such as scarves, hats, goggles, etc. Adjacent to the park, there is a small town named Palia; here one can buy goods and items popular in the region.

Eating out

In the entire expanse, there is only one restaurant to ease your hunger. It is located in the Main Office of the national park. Vegetarian food at reasonable prices is available here.
