Theni is a small town in the western part of the state of Tamil Nadu. The town of Theni is famous for the mass buying and selling of cotton, cardamom, chili, grapes, and fabrics.
It is home to the second biggest weekly market in the state and the fourth biggest in Southern India. The town of Theni is also known for its delicacies. A number of rivers run across this place and the main river of the area is the Vaigai River. You will also come across a number of waterfalls and popular hill stations in and around the town.

The town is an excellent shopping area for silk sarees. If you want to do large-scale shopping, you can visit Madurai. Edamal Street is a popular shopping district in Theni where you will see many shops and stores.
Places to see in and around Theni
Devadanapatti- The Kamatchi Amman Temple is the principal tourist attraction of Devadanapatti and lies on the riverbanks of the river Manjal. This holy site is around 3 km from Devadanapatti in the Theni District.
Periyakulam- Periyakulam is a major town in Theni. Lying in the foothills of the Kodaikkanal mountain it is located at a distance of 16 km from Theni district. The place is famous for mangoes. It is the main crop in this area and ranks 2nd to Salem in terms of production and is an export commodity to overseas locations.
Balasubramanya Temple- The Arulmigu Balasubramanya Temple is one of the major places of worship in Periyakulam. Rajendra Chola built this mandir about 20 centuries back.
Sothupparai dam- The Sothupparai dam is 12 km from Periyakulam. It has been constructed on the Varaha River. There is a picturesque spot for family outings. The water storage capacity of the dam astonishes the visitors.
Theertha Thotti- Theertha Thotti is a natural spring. It lies on the Madurai-Kochi National Highway connecting Bodinayakkanur and Theni. Subramanya Temple is a favorite tourist draw here.
Uthamapalayam- There are two historic temples in Uthamapalayam. One temple is devoted to Lord Shiva and the name of that temple is Sri Kaalahasthiishwara Swami temple and the second one is devoted to Lord Vishnu and it is known as Sri Narasimha Swami temple.
Kannagi Temple- During the day of Chitra Pournami the Kannagi temple hosts a whole day event. The temple lies in the boundary between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Saneeswaran Temple- The renowned Saneeswaran temple lies in the Kucchanur Village. It is dedicated to the God of Saturn and it is a Suyambhu sculpture.

Vaigai Dam- This dam has been constructed on the grand Vaigai River close to Andipatti. The elevation of this dam is 111 feet and has the capacity to store 71 feet of water. The Vaigai dam lies at a distance of 14 km from Theni.
Mavoothu- The Vellappar Temple is the principal tourist draw in Mavoothu. This sacred place of worship lies in the Varushanad mountain ranges at a distance of 20 km from Andipatti.
