The state, because of its location along the Bay of Bengal as well as the Indian Ocean on the coastal region of the Eastern Ghats, has got many rivers flowing within its geographical boundary so as to get drained in those huge water bodies. The network of rivers in this state of south India is formed of many famous rivers and their tributaries and distributaries. Flowing eastwards, all or most of these rivers are completely rain fed and originates from the Western Ghats in India.

Among the several rivers flowing through the state, Kaveri River, with 760 km of length, is the longest among all the Tamil Nadu rivers. Since, it is among the sacred rivers of the country, this river is popularly called the "Ganga of the South" or the "Dakshina Ganga". This rivers flow eastward in this state. Non-perennial Rivers in Tamil Nadu

Listed below are the non-perennial rivers that are among the different sources of water in the state:

Gundar River: It mainly flows through the districts of Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu.

Noyil River: This tributary of Kaveri flows through Dharapuram taluk and Palladam taluk in Erode district and Coimbatore district respectively.

Suruli River: This originates from the Suruli Waterfall, which is among the major tourist attractions in the Theni district.

Vaipar River: With its origination in the bordering hills of the Kerala state, the river runs through the Virudhunagar district as well as the Theni district.
