About Surajkund

This is among the ancient reservoirs in India, which dates back to the 10th Century. Literally, Surajkund means the "Lake of the Sun". Even known as the "Peacock Lake", the delightful beauty of the lake attracts many tourists from its neighborhood. This semicircular shaped artificial lake was constructed in the form of an amphitheatre. This reservoir is known to be built by King Suraj Pal of the Tomar dynasty. Being a worshipper of the Sun God himself, he even constructed a Sun temple near the western bank of the lake. The renowned crafts festival of Surajkund that is held every year in the month of February attracts foreign backpackers as well.

Location of Surajkund

This kund or lake, along with its Sun temple is located within proximity of the village of Surajkund that lies in between the Baharpur village and the Lakkarpur village. These villages are a part of the district of Faridabad in the state of Haryana. The famous Anagpur Dam, which was believed to be built prior to Surajkund, during the 8th Century is situated at a distance of around 2 km towards from the lake of Surajkund. Based on the Aravalli hills' backdrop, this reservoir as well as the dam is positioned in the Haryana state. Fed by a small local stream or nallah from the north western part, the drainage basin of this lake is included in the hill ranges of Aravalli.
