This is a doctoral academic degree, which is conferred to the students by the different universities. It is the other name of the post graduate degree called D. Phil or Doctor of Philosophy. The academic standard of this degree varies from one country to another, one institution to another and even from one time period to another. This is a kind of a research based degree, which can be of both entry level and higher doctorate level. Though the degree is called Doctor of Philosophy but it is not restricted solely to the subject of Philosophy or the subjects that are included in modern philosophy.

Current Scenario of Ph.d in India

Any person aspiring to do Ph. D in any subject needs to have a Masters degree in the concerned subject. Enrollment in a doctoral program in some particular subjects necessitates successful completion of M. Phil or Masters in Philosophy in that subject. In the recent past, many changes have been made in the guidelines for doing Ph. D in the Republic of India.
