English Poets

India has witnessed the birth of many Indian writers. Nissim Ezekiel is the leading name among the Indian-English poets.

Nissim Ezekiel and Dom Moraes epitomized Modern Indian poetry. Other notable poets in English in the early times were Derozio, Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Joseph Furtado, Armando Menezes, Toru Dutt, Romesh Chandra Dutt, Sarojini Naidu and Harendranath Chattopadhyaya.

Rabindranath Tagore was also amongst these famous poets, though his work was the translation of his Bengali and Hindi poems into English.

The poets picked up their subjects that were close to humanity. Their subjects were based on their personal feelings. A large section of Indian poetry was written during the Indian National Movement. Thus, the works of many poets had the essence of patriotism in it.
