Janaki Ballabh Patnaik Biography


Janaki Ballabh Patnaik was the governor of Assam from 2009 to 2014. Representing the Indian National Congress (INC), he also served as the Chief Minister of Odisha thrice, that is, from 1980-1989 and then from 1995-1999.

Born in 1927, Patnaik completed his schooling at Khurda High School. He obtained a bachelor's degree in Sanskrit from Utkal University in 1947 and then earned his master's degree in Sanskrit from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1949. He became the president of the Odisha State Unit of the youth wing of the Congress in 1950. He became the Union Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation and Labour in 1980.

Patnaik married Jayanti Patnaik and had three children - son Pruthvi Ballabh Patnaik and daughters Sudatta Patnaik and Supriya Patnaik.

He died at the age of 88 on April 21, 2015, in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
