Themes of Kathakali

Kathakali is based on the religious themes of the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and the ancient scriptures of the Puranas. It is generally performed only by male dancers. Men dress themselves in women's costume to portray the female characters. However, in recent times women Kathakali dancers are also performing.

Costume

The elaborate make-up and costumes are the distinguishing features of Kathakali. The characters are recognized by their distinct make-up and costume. The colors used in the make-up symbolize the nature of characters. The faces of noble male characters are colored green.
