Overview/History

Phyang is one the ancient Monasteries in Ladakh region. On the second and third day of the sixth month in the Tibetan calendar, the Phyang Tsedup festival is celebrated in the Phyang Monastery situated in Leh district. As per the English calendar it usually falls in the month of July-August. During the festival, Buddhist Lamas swarm in the Monastery fully clad in colorful costumes and huge masks on their faces.

Dringumpa Monastic Dynasty's founder Skyabje Jigten Gombo was regarded as a very pious person. A Thangka has been erected in his memory which is the present site of the famous Phyang Tsedup Festival. Similarly the massive Thangka of Skyabje Gombo is visited by people from all parts of the world to pay respect to the noble soul of Skyabje Jigten Gombo.

Celebration

In Phyang Tsedup festival, Special prayers are performed with sacred mask dances of monks in affluent silk costumes. Dramas or 'Chhams' are performed with a great deal of splendor and cheerfulness during the festival. All these are a part of their Buddhist ceremony. Followers perform a pilgrimage to the massive Thangka of Skyabje Gombo, which is displayed during this festival. It is unveiled once in three years. Also an exhibition is held during the festival. Numerous Buddhist articles are displayed in order to educate people about the message of Lord Buddha.
