| Overview/History | The Ladakh festival is an annual fiesta organised by the J&K Tourism Department, in association with local communities and district administrations of Leh. The main aim of this festival is to revitalise and bestow a spectacle of Ladakh's deep-rooted culture, traditions and heritage for the world to admire and enjoy. The festival provides a wonderful opportunity for the tourists to experience the culture and lifestyle of the people in Ladakh. The Ladakh festival usually stretches for at least 15 days but this year it was scheduled only for a period of 7 days, ensuring improved programmes and arrangements. However, the festival was cancelled due to the calamity in Jammu and Kashmir. |
| Celebration | In 2013, the Ladakh festival was celebrated with great zeal and fervour. It began with an inauguration ceremony which took place on large scale in Leh. A spectacular procession was carried out by various cultural troupes and contingents, local leaders, school children and dancers. They made their way through Leh in ceremonial costumes, performing while singing and dancing to traditional orchestra tunes. The procession finished at the Polo Ground and participants then performed various folk dances and samples of their regions. In the week long celebrations, various events and programmes were held such as costume dances, Mask dances, Craft stalls, Local cuisines and drinks, Musical concerts, Archery contests, Polo matches, Thanka exhibitions, etc. The festival was carried out for a week or so in many parts of Ladakh region and was enjoyed in various ways. |
