Devi Ahilya University is an integral part of the education of Indore. The university at Indore is situated on R N T Marg. It was established by an act passed by the Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh in 1964. According to the regulations of the 1964, the jurisdiction of the University of Indore extended upto Lahore. It was in 1988 that the university was renamed as Devi Ahilya University after the benevolent ruler, Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar.

Moreover, there are 153 colleges in Indore that affiliated under Devi Ahilya University. The university imparts education in a number of basic and professional disciplines. The main campus of the university possesses about 6000 students; whereas the total number of students belonging to the affiliated colleges is 1,20,000.
