C.G. Borde is a former Indian Test cricketer whose immense contributions have brought high-regard to Indian cricket during his era. His full name is Chandrakant Gulabrao Borde and he was born on July 21, 1934 in Pune, Maharashtra, India. Starting off his cricketing career as a promising young batsman in first-class cricket, Chandrakant Borde slowly carved a niche for himself in the cricket circuit. The major teams that C.G. Borde has represented in his career are India, Baroda and Maharashtra.
Over his playing years, C.G. Borde transformed into an all-round cricketer. He was a devastating and adventurous right-hand batsman whose batting idol was Vijay Hazare. Borde's batting displayed his sound technical sense and his capability of playing every stroke known in cricket. Borde was also an effective leg-spinner as well as an agile fielder in both the outfield and close-in positions.
With a First-class career spanning from 1952/53-1972/73, C.G. Borde has played in 251 First-class matches scoring a stunning 12805 runs and taking 331 wickets. C.G. Borde made his International Test debut for India against West Indies at Mumbai in November 1958, where he went on to score 109 and 96 in his first Test Series. A fearless player of fast bowling, adeptly facing the likes of McKenzie, Hall and Griffith, Borde has played 55 Tests, scoring an amazing 3061 runs, with his highest being 177 (not-out). He has also scored five centuries including two centuries in two Tests in three Tests against West Indies in 1966-67. With the ball, Borde has taken 52 Test wickets with his best being 5/88, as well as 37 catches.
C.G. Borde's talent and skill was even noticed by the international cricketing circuit, he was the only Indian selected to play for the 'Rest of the World' team that played against Barbados in a commemoration match in 1967. He was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1966 for his contributions to Indian Cricket.
In 1970, due to his on-and-off form and slackened reflexes, the selectors eventually replaced him. However, Borde continued on with the game long after, serving as a Manager of the touring teams, as well as being the Chairman of the selection committee.
