Music Directors Biography

Our country is known for its rich musical resources. For years, music has catered to the varied tastes of people.

From ancient Indian classical music to the latest Indi-Pop music, the contribution of Indian music directors is worth mentioning. Music is a source of inspiration, entertainment and a way of expression. Its binds various cultures together.

Everybody has heard about Salil Chowdhury, O.P.Nayyar, S.D.Burman, R.DBurman and their wonderful creations.

Ilaiyaraaja, M.S.Viswanathan, Naushad, Kalyanji-Anandji, Laxmikant-Pyarelal are some other renowned music directors of the past. R.C.Boral, Pankaj Mullick and Anil Biswas were some notable directors in the 40's whose music scores were basically on the Northern India's Moghul and Rajput courts. Some popular forms of music are ghazal, qawwali, thumri, dhrupad, dadra, bhajan, kirtan, and gurbani.

The Golden period of Hindi film music began in the 50's with the coming of directors like Shankar Jaikishen, Madan Mohan, C.Ramchandra, Khayyyam and others. Rock music arrived in India with the visit of Beatles in the 1960's and 70's.

Their music fused with the music of Ravi Shankar and Zakir Hussain ultimately leading to the emergence of what we call Raga Rock. It was only in the late 80's that the Rock Bands came into limelight. Among the contemporary music directors A.R.Rahman has earned a great name and fame.

Then we also have other big names like Shankar,Ehsaan and Loy, Jatin-Lalit, Himesh Reshammiya, Aadesh Srivastav, Ismail Darbar and Anu Malik.
