Dr. L. Subramaniam is a reputed Tamil violinist,and composer. He has extensive training in Carnatic and Western classical music and made his mark in fusion orchestral music compositions.
He was born into a Tamil family of established musicians. His father V.Lakshminarayana and his mother V.Seethalakshmi were accomplished musicians of their time. L.Subramaniam gave his first public performance at the age of ten. He is highly qualified with a Doctorate in Medicine but is a violinist by choice.
Dr. L.Subramaniam has accompanied many famous personalities in Carnatic music including the venerable Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar. He played with Palghat Mani Iyer on Mridangam. He has also collaborated with the South East Asian artists.
This 'Violin Chakravarthy' has composed for 'crossover' films like Salaam Bombay and Mississippi Masala both directed by Mira Nair, India born, New York based film director. He has also composed for Bernardo Bertolucci's 'Little Buddha' and Merchant Ivory's film 'Cotton Mary'.
He received a Grammy nomination in 1981. He has national awards like Padma Shri (1988) and Padma Bhushan (2001) to his credit.
His talent of fusion of world music became apparent when he created orchestras like 'Fantasy on Vedic Chant' with Zubin Mehta for the New York Philharmonic. He also composed the 'Global Symphony' with the Berlin Opera.
This versatile composer has also written books on Carnatic film music and Hollywood film scores. His brother is a famous violinist L.Shankar. He is presently married to Kavita Krishnamoorthy, an accomplished playback singer.
