Bankura district - West Bengal

Bankura district is situated in the state of West Bengal, India and is a very important district in terms of ancient history and culture. It has been mentioned in the great epic of Mahabharata, Buddhist Jatakas and Larh of the old Jain.

Location of Bankura

Bankura lies to the west of West Bengal and comes under the Bardhaman division. It is located between latitude 22 degrees 38 minutes north and longitude 86 degrees 36 minutes east to 87 degrees 47 minutes east. To the north is Bardhaman district, to the west is Purulia district and to the south is Paschi Medinapure. Hugli is to the east of the district. River Damodar runs from the north of the district. It is situated between the hilly terrain of Santal Parganas of the state of Bihar and Chotanagpur on one side and the fertile plains on the other.

Bankura has the highest tribal population in the state. It comprises of major industries like rice, cotton weaving and oil seed milling. The high necked terracotta horse here is very famous. Temples like Raghunath Mandir and the Ekteshwar Mandir are some of the attractions here.
