Founded by Raja Nanner, Mirzapur District formerly known as Girzapur, after the Goddess Parvati (Girija Devi) derives its present nomenclature from the juxtaposition of the terms Mir,Ja and Pur meaning sea, outcome and town, respectively. Stretching across 23 ° 52' to 25 ° 32' North latitude and 82 °7' to 83 °33' East longitude, Mirzapur covers an expanse of 4521 sq. km. A part of Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi Division,the jagged terrains of Mirzapur is enclosed between Varanasi on the north and northeast, Sonbhadra on the south and Allahabad on the southwest.

The Census Report, 2001 states the population of Mirzapur is 1657140. The district is supported by an agrarian economic backbone.
