Telangana is a newly formed and 29th state of India. After the division, the state got 10 districts which comprise major tourist attractions and places to see. Forts and palaces, monuments, religious places, water falls and many more attractions can be found and explored in this newly founded state. Let's have a look at some of the major attractions of Telangana.

Charminar

Category: History & Culture

This monument and mosque is a major landmark in Hyderabad. It is listed among one of the most recognised structures in the country and is located on the banks of Musi river. The architecture and design of this place attracts people from all walks of life. Mohammed Quli Qutb Shahi, the fifth sultan of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, had built the Charminar to commemorate the end of the deadly plague. Charminar is derived from two distinct words 'Char' and 'Minar' which means four towers.

Golconda Fort

Located in the western part of Hyderabad, Golconda Fort is spread over an area of three kilometres. Undoubtedly, it is one of the magnificent fortress complexes in the country. It is known for its acoustic system. The water supply system, the factories and the popular 'Rahban' cannon inside the fort are some of its major attractions. It impresses the visitors with its marvelous architecture and is one of the heritage structures of India. The fort is surrounded with a landscape garden and the nearby tombs - Qutb Shahi and Naya Qila.

Mecca Masjid

The Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad finds its place among the largest mosques in the country. Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah began its construction in 1614 and it was completed by Aurangzeb in 1693. It is believed that the mosque was built with bricks brought from Mecca. It can accommodate as many as 10,000 people at the same time to perform namaz. There are plenty of options available for the tourists to enjoy varieties of delicious foods and also shop from a nearby market known as Laad Bazaar.

Nehru Zoological Park

This zoo, located in Hyderabad, is one of the best in Asia and has as many as 1,500 species of animals, birds and reptiles. The Lion Safari is a major attraction for visitors. Also, there are many other places to see and things to do inside the zoo such as a pre-historic dinosaur park, a natural history museum, a nocturnal zoo, a mini train and animal rides. These attractions can make the visit to the zoo a memorable one.

Thousand Pillar Temple

Located in Hanamkonda in Warangal, the Thousand Pillar Temple is dedicated to the presiding deities, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Surya. The visitors get a chance to learn more about the rich culture and heritage of our country. A large number of devotees visit the temple every year. The temple remains open from 5.00 am to 9.00 pm everyday.

Warangal Fort

The Warangal Fort is believed to be in existence since the 12th century. It was the capital of the Kaktiya dynasty. The fort is laid out in the three concentric circular walls with defensive fortifications. On the gates of the fort, there are extensive intricate carvings of lotus buds, mythical animals, looped garlands and foliated tails. The fort remains open from 10.00 am to 7:00 pm everyday.

Birla Mandir

Built in 1976, the Birla temple was constructed with white marbles which were imported from Rajasthan. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the form of Sri Venkateswara. In the vicinity of the temple complex, there is also a temple devoted to Lord Buddha. The Buddha temple also houses many fresco paintings which describe his life. The temple is open between 7:00 am to 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.


Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

The dam is built on the Krishna River and is the world's largest masonry dam too. It was built between the years 1955 and 1967. The dam has 26 gates and a hydroelectric plant. Boating facilities are made available by the tourism department of Telangana.

Kuntala Waterfalls

Category: Nature The Kuntala Waterfalls is located in Adilabad district of Telangana, about 260 kilometres from Hyderabad. The place is far away from the hustle and bustle of the city life, and offers the best of nature. It is filled with dense forests, valleys and chirping birds. Visitors can also enjoy trekking here.

Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary

The wildlife sanctuary located in Adilabad is home to varieties of animals and flora and fauna. The visitors can enjoy and experience the thrills and adventure offered in this beautiful animal kingdom. Jeep safaris and bird watching trips are also available here.
