Tonk District in Rajasthan, western India is known for its beautiful age old mansions and havelis. The district has a population of 1211343 according to the census of 2001 data.

Location of Tonk District:

Tonk District is situated at a distance of about 82 km from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. The district is bordered by Bhilwara and Bundi districts in the south, Jaipur in the north, Ajmer in the west and Sawai Madhopur in the east. The total land area of the district is 70914 sq km, which accounts for 2.1 % of the total area of Rajasthan.

History of Tonk:

The founder of Tonk was Nawab Mohammad Aamir Khan. This former princely state, founded in the year 1824, was originally the seat of the Bairath civilization. The area was also ruled by the Mauryas and then by Harsha Vardhana. The place was part of the Bairath State. It was ruled by famous Rajput dynasties like the Chauhans, Sisodias. Holkars, Solankis and others. In the year 1950, the region was converted into a district and it became a part of Rajasthan.

Climate of Tonk District:

The climate of the Tonk district in Rajasthan is hot and dry. In summers the temperature goes as high as 45 degree Celsius while in winters the it remain at 22 degrees Celsius.

Economy of Tonk District:

Different kinds of crops like Groundnut, maize, sorghum, pearl millet, wheat, barley and gram are grown over here indicating that agriculture is the main occupation over here. Besides this, the district is rich in mineral deposits like garnet, quartz, morrum, feldspar, granite and Bajari. Tonk is particularly known for its sandstone. Deoli is the chief producer of sandstone in Tonk.

Getting to Tonk District:

In order to reach Tonk district in Rajasthan, one can take a flight to Jaipur Airport. There is a good network of roads connecting the district with Delhi, Bundi, Ajmer, Kota, Jaipur and Sawai Madhopur. There are ample number of buses operated by the RSRTC. The nearest railway station is the one at Banasthali-Newai(35 km) and the Jaipur Station(96 km). Express trains run along this route on a regular basis thereby making it convenient for the tourists to reach this place.
