Meghalaya has lately coming up as a remarkably popular tourist destination, with a wide diversity of flora and fauna it attracts lots of tourist each year. The only problem it faces is that there is no railway station in the state. However plans have been proposed for building a new railway line in the state.

As of now, the nearest railhead is in Assam and a good number of the trains arrive up to Paltan Bazar railway station in Guwahati. The only way to get into the state is by road or air. The state transport corporation runs buses from the railway station to travel into Meghalaya; also private buses and taxi services are easily available.

The wait of having a rail link in Meghalaya has finally finished as the concerned authorities have offered over 65.09 hectares of land to the North Frontier Railways (NFR) for the proposed 19.47 km broad gauge line from Dudhnoi to Mendipathar in East Garo Hills. Similarly, an inclusion of the Byrnihat- Shillong Railhead was also proposed in the railway budget.

The areas on which the new line would be placed are Nolbari-Deuripara, Boromiapara, Chotomiapara, Mataranga, Manikganj, Horingkata, Bakenang-Tilapara and Mendipathar. With the work at full swing in Assam and Meghalaya the railway line will by completed by 2013.
