With varied types of antique items and art works there are about 36 Museums in Maharashtra. All these Museums of Maharashtra are unique in their own way. Maharashtra has the rare privilege of celebrating the centenary of two Museums. The most famous Museums of Maharashtra are Bombay Natural History Society, Bharata Itihasa Samshodhak Mandal, Heras Institute of Indian History & Culture, Jehangir Nicholson Museum of Modern Art, Nehru Science Center, Prince of Wales Museum, Raja Dinker Kelkar Museum.
The Bharata Itihasa Samshodhak Mandal is a well known research centre for the study of Indian history and culture. It's a grey stone building and was established in 1910. Located near Sadashiv Peth, the Bharata Itihasa Samshodhak Mandal comprises of a library, museum, picture gallery, study, and a well equipped laboratory for preservation of documents, rare books, manuscripts, coins, paintings, sculpture, weapons and other antiques. There is a vast collection of books on religion, philosophy, ritual, grammar, astrology, astronomy and medicine. Besides there are some 18th century maps and charts and most of the manuscripts found are written either in Sanskrit or in Marathi.
The Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture is situated in St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. It's a small museum containing antiques which are of people's interest. The Heras Institute Indian History and Culture is named after Henry Heras who was profoundly interested in studying and documenting Indian history. An Indologist, Henry Heras was born in Barcelona, Spain. He came to India in 1922 and started the Indian historical institute. This institute was later renamed as the Heras Institute Indian History and Culture. He was a member of Indian Historical Records Commission, Indian History Congress and the International Congress of Historical Science and also founded Bombay Historical Society.
Jehangir Nicholson Museum of Modern Art is located at Nariman Point, Mumbai. The museum has a fantastic collection of paintings, photographs, and sculptures. The Jehangir Nicholson Museum of Modern Art was set up by Jehangir Nicholson, a collector of modern art, in 1976. There are paintings of Rabindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Nalini Malini and Jitish Kallat. The Jehangir Nicholson Museum of Modern Art remains open from11 am to 7 pm everyday, except Sundays.
This museum has a variety of ancient objects dating back to the Indus valley civilization. There are also artifacts and ruins of Gupta dynasty and Mauryan kingdom. The other collection includes Tibetan art, porcelain work from china, objects of Mughal and Rajput people,palm leaf manuscripts of 11th and 12th century, 19th century pahari paintings, jewelry and glass collection. Inspired by Bijapur Domes the Prince Wales Museum have a large central dome made of basalt rock.
Raja Dinker Kelkar Museum was set up by Dr. Dinker Kelkar in the memory of his son Raja who died at a very young age. Raja Dinker Kelkar Museum has 2,500 objects on display out of 20,000. This enormous collection was started by Dr. Dinker Kelkar in 1920. In 1960 he handled is entire collected work to the Government of Maharashtra's Archaeological Department. The Raja Dinker Kelkar Museum has some of the finest collection of art and decorative objects belonging to 18th and 19th century.
