A city and the headquarters of the district with the same name, Udupi is a popular tourist attraction. The city is nestled between the mountains of the Western Ghats on the East and the Arabian Sea on the West. Udupi is an important and significant pilgrimage site. The Krishna temple is one of the most popular attractions of Udupi and every year thousands of tourists and pilgrims visit the temple. The city is also known as Lord Parasurama Kshetra and pilgrims from all parts of the country come here to have a glimpse of the Kanakana Kindi or Kanaka's Window.

Sri Krishna Temple and Eight Maths: The Krishna Temple is the most revered and popular place in the city. There is a story behind the existence of the eight maths. According to the story, there were eight monks, who used to jointly worship Krishna but later, they dispersed as per their preaching and ordinations and established their own maths. These maths are located in separate buildings. The maths along with their monks are as follows:

St. Mary's Islands: These are a group of small islets and are located to the north of Malpe. You can travel to the islands by boats from Malpe.
Barkur: It is a hamlet in the Kachur village and located at a distance of about 16km to the north of Udupi. There are many temples in this place which have inscriptions depicting the historical past.
Ambalpady: It is a well-known Shakti Kendra and is located at a distance of 3 km from Udupi. Major attractions are the 500-year old temples of Janardhana and Mahakali.
Padubidri: Located about 26 km from Udupi, it has Brahmasthana, a Mahaganapati temple and a Mahalingeshwara temple. Dakke-bali, a religious festival is celebrated in Brahmasthana once in two years.
Kaup, Brahmavar, Perdoor, Nilavar, Kota and Vandar are some of the other tourist places in the city.
There is no airport in Udupi and the nearest is the Bajpe Airport in Mangalore. Another airport close to Udupi is the Hubli Airport in Karnataka. Udupi railway station connects it to many other cities. Direct connectivity through buses is also available from other cities to Udupi.
