The Education Department of Gujarat looks after the overall education of the state; be it primary education, literacy education, secondary education or higher education. The department has certain structures to look after the smooth running of the education system in the state. The department forms the policies related to education and supervises and implements those to run the educational institutions in the state.
There are many universities in Gujarat offering undergraduate and post-graduate courses in several disciplines. Every university has some distinct features and specialisations to offer to the students. For instance, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is the only university in the state that uses English as the medium of instruction. There are four agriculture universities solely providing education related to agriculture. Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology in Surat, the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad and National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad are some of the other prestigious centres of higher learning in the state.
Distance education is also provided by some of the universities.
Admissions for every new session are conducted depending upon the various criteria of the universities. Generally, the admissions are given on the basis of merit by issuing cut-off lists or by entrance examinations.
