Marine Engineering

This branch of science, deals with the engineering of ships, boats, oil rigs and different other kinds of marine vessel. Such type of engineering includes both marine propulsion, which is all about the propulsion systems of the vessel and marine architecture that refers to the engineering of the structures supporting the various marine vessels.

Marine engineering can be of the following two kinds:

Shore based engineering

A student aspiring to be a marine engineer needs to have an academic degree of this course of study. Many universities, based all over the world, offers varied courses on this field. The nature of those educational programs ranges from under graduate level to post graduate level.

Current Scenario of Marine Engineering in India

The requirement of Marine Engineers is getting increased day by day to keep pace with the increase in the number of marine vessels. However, the different engineering institutes in India, which offers courses on marine engineering, keep a cut off marks along with some other eligibility criteria for enrollment in their offered programs on this field. The basic and common eligibility criteria for getting admission in any of such courses is that a student needs to score at least 50 % marks in the subjects of chemistry, english, mathematics and physics. This is followed by passing the admission tests conducted by the respective institute, where a candidate intends to enroll him or herself.

In the Indian Republic, the students graduating in marine engineering are conferred with the degree of B. E. or Bachelor of Engineering whereas, those post graduating in this branch of engineering are awarded with the degree M. E. or Master of Engineering. Post graduating in marine engineering, some of the engineering institutes in India even provides an opportunity to a marine engineer to do Ph. D in that field.
